Do I Have to Pay for My Child’s Funeral?
Losing a child is a devastating experience, and the last thing any parent wants to worry about is the financial burden of a funeral. Fortunately, the government provides some financial support for families who have lost a child through the Children’s Funeral Fund (CFF).
The CFF covers the following funeral costs:
- Provision of funds up to £300 to cover the cost of a coffin, shroud, casket, or any other covering.
- Removal of any implanted medical devices that may interfere with the cremation process.
- Completion of all necessary certificates for the cremation on behalf of the medical professional.
- Provision of a container suitable for storing ashes in a columbarium or similar facility if the one returned to the family is not suitable for this purpose.
- Payment of fees charged by a third-party grave digger, where such expenses are not covered by the burial or cremation authority.
While the CFF can help to alleviate some of the financial burdens, it’s important to note that it only covers certain funeral costs. Families may still need to pay for additional expenses, such as flowers, transportation, and the services of a funeral director.
