Local Bereavement Services

In the event of a death you will need to register this death in our Birkenhead office.

  • Personal Identification
  • The deceased’s passport or birth certificate if they have one.
  • Death Certificate

Death certificates are usually sent from your GP to the registrar or posted in the mail.

You can also fill out the death registration form from the Council to help speed up the process.

Wirral Registrar’s Office

If a death occurs in the Wirral, you will need to register the death at this office in Birkenhead. You will need to contact the registrar and book an appointment to register the death.

Coroner’s Office

In the case of an unexpected death, a postmortem examination may be required in certain cases. This will be handled by the coroner’s office and can take up to 14 days. In this case a temporary death certificate will be provided.

If a death occurs at a local hospital you will need to visit to collect personal belongings and any relevant documentation the hospital may provide. You may need to call beforehand to let them know of your arrival for your convenience.

Getting Help with Funeral Costs

If you are in receipt of DSS or any other government benefit you may be entitled with help towards the costs of the funeral.

In this case we would advise you to contact the Bereavement office. You can find further help on the government website or by calling 0800 731 0469 for help over the telephone.
