Immediate Actions to Take After a Death at Home

  1. Contact a doctor or healthcare professional to officially declare the death. If the death was expected (e.g. terminal illness), the individual’s doctor or hospice team may be called to provide a death certificate. If the death is unexpected or the cause is unclear, emergency services or a doctor should be notified to confirm the death and provide guidance.
  2. Keep your loved one at home for a short period of time, allowing family members to say their goodbyes. It’s important to ensure that the body is respected and comfortable by closing the eyes gently and position the body in a restful manner.
  3. Contact our funeral directors and we will arrange for the transfer of the body from your home to our funeral home, where preparations for the funeral or cremation can begin. Have the following details ready when you call the funeral home:
  • Full name of the deceased
  • Date and place of death
  • Cause of death (if known)
  • Your contact information
