Dying Abroad and Repatriation

Losing a loved one while they are abroad can be a traumatic and overwhelming experience, particularly when it comes to navigating the logistics of repatriating their body. Whether the death occurred unexpectedly or while traveling, this page will guide you through the necessary steps for handling the situation and repatriating your loved one’s remains back home.

What is Repatriation?

Repatriation is the process of returning a deceased person’s body to their home country or place of origin, allowing loved ones to hold a funeral or burial according to their traditions. If your loved one passes away while abroad, it can be overwhelming to manage the complex logistics and legal requirements involved.

At Kenna & Turner, we provide compassionate support and expert guidance through every step of the repatriation process. From arranging transportation and handling necessary documentation to complying with both local and international regulations, our team ensures that your loved one is returned home with the utmost care and respect. Let us take care of the details, so you can focus on honoring their memory.

Immediate Actions to Take After a Death Abroad

  1. Confirm that your loved one has passed away abroad. If they were in a hospital or under medical care abroad, the medical team will assist with this. If the death occurs unexpectedly (e.g., in a hotel or while traveling), you should contact local authorities or emergency services to confirm the death.
  2. Contact the travel insurance company of the deceased person to identify any covered medical, repatriation, legal, interpretation or translation fees.
  3. Speak with a local funeral director about your options, whether it’s for a burial or cremation abroad or in the UK.
  4. Register the death in the country where the person died; our funeral directors will be able to help you with this and provide you the best route for registering a death. To register a death you will need:
  • Documents about yourself showing your full name and date of birth, such as a passport, driving licence or birth certificate.
  • The passport of the person who died or other documents showing their full name, date of birth, passport number, and where and when the passport was issued.
  • Details of the next of kin.
